People call the same thing by three names, and quotes get compared that are not comparable. Someone asks four companies for a “wall unit” and gets prices from $900 to $8,000 — not because anyone is overcharging, but because they are quoting four different products. Here is what each term usually means.
A real ARV built-in media wall
The oldest term, and the broadest. In most of Canada a wall unit is a piece of furniture that sits against a wall: shelving, cabinets, sometimes a TV space in the middle. It arrives as an object and it leaves as an object. It does not touch the ceiling, it does not follow the wall, and there is usually a gap behind it.
Freestanding wall units are cheap and movable. The trade-off is that they never quite fit — a two-inch gap at one end, a plinth that does not meet the baseboard, a top that stops short of the ceiling and collects dust.
Usually the same thing with the TV as the organising idea. Lower cabinetry for equipment, a TV above, sometimes towers on either side. Still generally furniture rather than architecture — though “custom entertainment unit” is often used to mean a built-in, which is where the confusion starts.
A media wall is built into the room rather than placed in it. It runs floor to ceiling, wall to wall or to a defined stop, and it is scribed to the actual surfaces of your home — which are never perfectly flat or plumb. The TV is integrated rather than sitting on something. Cabling is inside. Often there is a fireplace, lighting and storage designed as one composition.
The practical difference is that a media wall reads as part of the house. Buyers see a finished room, not a piece of furniture that came with it.
