A real ARV install — finished custom closet project
Willowdale, Bathurst Manor, Downsview and the streets around Bayview Village are full of homes built between 1948 and 1965. The bedrooms are generous by today’s standards; the closets are not. A typical original closet here is 48 inches wide, 22 inches deep, with a single wooden rail at 66 inches and one shelf above it. Everything above that shelf is dead air — usually 30 to 40 inches of it.
That dead air is the cheapest storage in your house. Double hanging on one side, adjustable shelving to the ceiling, and a drawer bank where the floor currently holds shoes will typically get you 60 to 70 percent more usable storage in exactly the same opening, without touching a wall.
The tower corridor through North York Centre has the opposite problem: newer, tighter, and governed by a building rulebook. Suite closets are often shallower than the 24 inches a standard system assumes, so we build shallower carcasses with angled hanging rather than losing the closet to a system that does not fit. Where there is a den or a wide entry hall, a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe wall usually gains more storage than reworking the original closet at all.
Service elevator bookings, certificates of insurance and permitted install hours are routine for us in these buildings — we file the paperwork before the truck leaves the shop.
