There is a real answer to this and it is not always “buy the custom one”. Three products get compared under one heading, and for some closets the cheapest is genuinely the right call. Here is how they differ.
A real ARV custom closet build
Wire shelving kits. $80 to $250. Coated steel, adjustable, sold in standard widths. Fast to install, and if your closet is a plain rectangle they work.
Modular organizer systems. $400 to $1,500. Melamine towers and shelves in fixed increments — 12, 16, 24 inch modules — that you combine to fill an opening. Better looking than wire, and better at drawers.
Built-to-measure closets. From $950. Cut to your actual opening, scribed to walls that are not plumb, with hanging heights set to your clothes rather than to a catalogue.
Fixed increments assume your closet is a multiple of them. Almost none are. A 76-inch opening filled with 24-inch modules leaves 4 inches of dead space — usually shoved to one end as a gap, or covered with a filler panel that announces itself.
Older Toronto homes make this worse. Walls that are out of plumb by half an inch over eight feet are normal. A modular tower installed against that wall either leans or leaves a wedge-shaped gap. Built-to-measure work is scribed, which is a technical way of saying the panel is cut to match the wall’s actual shape rather than the shape it should have been.
The biggest gain from a custom build is usually not better materials. It is using the vertical space. A typical original closet has one rail at 66 inches and one shelf above it, leaving 30 to 40 inches of dead air at the top. Double hanging on one side and shelving to the ceiling on the other typically adds 50 to 70 percent more usable storage in exactly the same opening.
Wire and modular systems can do some of this, but they stop at standard heights. Built-to-measure goes to your ceiling, whatever height that happens to be.

Where custom pulls ahead is drawers. A modular system’s drawers are the first thing to fail; runners in the $400 range are not built for daily use over a decade. Soft-close runners are standard on everything we build, not an upgrade line on the quote.

Custom is worth it when the closet is used daily, when the opening is awkward, when there is dead vertical space to reclaim, or when the closet is visible from the room and you want it to look like part of the house.
